Toshi Martial Arts

Toshi Martial Arts started out as Toshi JKA Karate Club in Benoni, South Africa in 1992. Senseis Alex was fortunate enough to have a room, ideally suited as a dojo, built into his house, at first it was utilized for their family practice only, but soon received requests for tuition and so Toshi was born.

The name Toshi or 'fighting spirit' seemed to embody their vision of the martial arts, students were not all expected to excel in competition, but were encouraged to make the most of their abilities, indeed the most memorable students were those with physical disabilities who showed the 'fighting spirit' to progress in the martial arts.

At this time Senseis Alex was 'cross-training' with other martial arts and other styles, attending any club that would accept him. Several club members were highly ranked in other karate styles as well as jujitsu and kung-fu, including one member who was, at the USA world kung-fu championships, a world full contact champion. Members included South African policemen who wanted practical training.

On returning to the UK in 1995, Senseis Alex continued the Toshi tradition with Sensei Alex obtaining his coach's license for SCI jujitsu and Kickboxing and opening schools in Darwin Centre Biggin Hill.

He also took over Wolf's karate club at the Wolf's gym, Hayes, run by the ferocious beast of Gladiator fame!(I hate to dispel the myth, but a nicer, more helpful wolf you will never meet). With Wolf's (Mike's) help the club flourished until the gym closed in June 1999. Premesis are still being sought in Hayes for these students who, in the meantime, train at the newly taken over Biggin Hill Karate club at the Aperfield WI hall in Biggin Hill.
